except when your community assessment reveals the Chippewa Valley, Wisconsin population you serve has a higher than average incidence of obesity, chronic disease and poor health behaviors. In an effort to put a stop to this alarming trend, sister hospitals Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s came to us with the idea of creating an ongoing community wellness initiative.

It was critical to inspire people to be more active in a nonjudgmental, nonthreatening way. The initiative needed to be doable, trackable, fun—and build a movement for long-lasting, healthy living. GO Chippewa Valley was launched. It was simple, motivational and encouraging. It invited people to find a way they liked to move and commit to moving at least 15 minutes a day.

The GO Chippewa Valley movement is going strong. The campaign won a Community Service Award from the Wisconsin Cancer Council for its promotion of a healthy lifestyle that decreases the risk of cancers, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and other diseases. The initiative and its link to reducing the risks of various forms of cancer were presented to the Wisconsin state legislature.
