Hailey Sault announced recently that health care marketing leader Stephen Moegling had joined our growing team as SVP of Growth. In that post, you learned what Stephen will be doing for Hailey Sault and what attracted him to our firm.

For this post, we wanted to share more of Stephen’s personal story: where he grew up, what drew him to working with health and cause brands, and why you should never serve Stephen wine in a red plastic cup.

   1. Where are you from originally?

I was born in Canton, Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

My mother was a school teacher. I think I inherited my mother’s love of teaching. In fact, most of what I do in my work is share what I’ve learned, what I’m studying and what works to help others improve, both in health and cause marketing and professional growth and development.

  1. Where do you live now?

I live in Richmond, Virginia. Richmond, like Duluth, has a wonderful education and arts community, a revitalized downtown, and has a big city feel with small town charm.

My fiancee and I live in a 1920s brick and slate home in an older, established neighborhood with lots of crepe myrtles and oak trees that line our street. We often walk to a neighborhood restaurant, Stella’s, which is famous in both Richmond and in Charleston, South Carolina for outstanding Greek cuisine.

We share our home with two slightly pudgy cats, Jasper and Piper, and an overzealous “Woodle” (Poodle and Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier), Oliver. Oliver looks like an Ewok from Star Wars and is still in his puppy years. (Hence his constant nibbling on just about everything.)

  1. What’s your education and business background?

I graduated cum laude from Kent State University with a B.S. in Advertising. I knew from a young age I wanted to be in advertising and marketing. I was lucky to find a school that offered a degree in advertising. I credit that education with helping me land an amazing writing job after graduating, at an agency in Akron, Ohio.

I eventually left Ohio for a warmer climate—Virginia—and began working for a firm that specialized in health care marketing. I discovered a passion for working with brands that made a positive impact.

In the last five years of my work with the firm, I became part-owner, wrote and spoke on trends impacting health brands, and helped the firm attract amazing clients. Then I made the move to Hailey Sault!

  1. Do you have a life motto, something you live by, if so what is it?
Care and be kind to myself, so that I may care and be kind to others.

I have found that most of us don’t treat ourselves well. We have negative self-talk, limiting beliefs, overextend ourselves. The result is that we never experience the extraordinary abilities we are all born with.

My personal mission is to help others go beyond their self-imposed limitations. But I can’t serve this mission if I don’t first care for myself, treat myself well, and let go of outdated ways of thinking, doing and being.

  1. What do you like doing outside of work?

I am a hobby chef and my fiancee and I like to host dinner parties in our home. I also like to walk and hike with my dog, Ollie. I also play drums in a band made up of other business executives, called Spider Kelly, named after a minor character in a Hemingway novel.

  1. What would you say is one of your idiosyncrasies?

I have many!  Here are a few:

  • My desk papers have to be stacked a specific way.
  • I must have music on to write and think—preferably jazz.
  • I can only enjoy wine in a nice glass.
  • I practice speeches and talks by talking to myself while I’m driving, cooking and walking my dog.
  1. What do you want people to know about you?

I believe that the greatest setbacks and pain we experience in life can become our most transformational moments.

  1. What is your Hailey Sault?

The place: the pool at the Jamaica Inn, Ocho Rios, our favorite destination in the world. The inn is quiet, beautiful, serene, and the people are amazing.

The state: equanimity, oneness with things.
